As part of Indiescapes curation, I spent some time with Gus Eka and Beate. They are definitely amongst the most inspiring people I've ever met. Hearing about why and how Gus Eka started his dance school, and his ambitions of spreading Balinese dance to the world was humbling. He's a world class teacher who is evidently loved by his students and fellow teachers. His objective wasn't just to teach us how to dance, it was also to understand all the principles behind it, and how it ties in with the Balinese culture.
Beate, originally German, now Indonesian, is a genuine lady who puts a lot of heart into everything that she does. She made me feel comfortable and right at home. The partnership she has with Gus Eka is amazing. And the dinner she provided was delicious!
I was also very lucky to watch Gus Eka's toddler son dance with his mother, Dayu. Heartening to see that the love for Balinese dance runs in the family!

As part of Indiescapes curation, I went to Made's village in Kangkang. The best part of the experience were the stories! Made's village is truly untouched by tourism and still preserves many traditions and customs. These are not at all similar to the societal and cultural norms that the majority of us are used to. What makes the stories even more interesting is that Made's lovely wife, Birgit, is Austrian. It was intriguing how the modern world influences Balinese lives, and how they work with the differences.
I also really enjoyed the hills and rice fields behind the village. Something different from the usual cities, buildings, cars… A very relaxing yet insightful day!

As part of Indiescapes curation, I cooked with Bee. She has this ability to make cooking seem effortless. I'm not one to wield the pots or the pans at home, so even I was surprised with how good our food turned out. I unabashedly praised myself as I devoured our Cellophane Noodles Baked with Shrimps. And because cooking it at Bee's seemed so easy, I vowed to make it once I got home. Let's hope some of Bee's cooking skills indeed rubbed off on me!
