Wayang is one of the greatest story-telling traditions in the world. It is a Masterpiece of Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity (UNESCO). It has developed in Indonesia since the 6th century, and yet still alive and vibrant! The art involves getting deep in the epic Mahabhrata and Ramayana stories of good versus evil, with performances accompanied by the remarkable music of live gamelan orchestra. Wayang is at the core of Indonesian culture, especially its morality. If you're looking for an authentic cultural experience, Wayang Village is for you!
What You Will Do
You will stay at the villagers' home for 1 night and will learn the art of Wayang, from making the puppet, playing gamelan, to becoming master puppeteer!
We will also have plenty of time to discover the nature in the area, such as the terraced paddy fields, mountains and best of all, the waterfall! It'd be off-track, but so worth it :)
ooh, let's not forget that you'd get a taste of unique food from the locality, all served with a smile! All and all, this is going to be your EAT PRAY LOVE experience :)
Why We Do This
As Indonesian, my friends and I want to promote Indonesian culture, especially Wayang, which we think is very precious. When we went to the village, we see that Wayang is still relevant today but the centre of the art industry is pretty remote. So we are determined to bring people to the village to introduce them what true Indonesian culture is.
The programs include food and drinks, accommodation, workshops, guides and English language support, as well as travel insurance.
Transportation is not included but we would be happy to help you arrange your travel.
From Balapan Train Station, you can take the bus (towards Praci) and stop at Cengkal. You can then take ojek (motorcycle taxi): turn right at Dusun Tiken, turn left towards Jogjakarta, and you will find the sign going into Desa Kepuhsari.
