Ancient Kingdom of Bali Experience

Snapshot
It’s intriguing to see how human existence can be interconnected with nature and the spirit. We know so much about the world around us, but what about what resides within us? Connect the two with this magnificent experience. Dress up as a Balinese, make offerings at two local temples and understand the mystical customs of the local villagers.
What You Will Do
• Be picked up from your hotel in Ubud at 3pm. Appreciate Ukur Ukuran, an ancient 6th century Hindu temple and a stone meditation chamber after a scenic drive.
• Start trekking from the nearby Umadawa village where you spot local villagers washing in the river, and feeding their pigs and cows.
• Learn about the Subak irrigation system. Sabuk is now a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. If the timing is right, you can try harvesting or planting in the rice fields!
• Savour homemade Indonesian dishes made by my beautiful wife Putri after we head to my house. Learn how to make the offerings at the temple. Putri will assist you to put on ceremony clothing for your temple visit.
• Dressed as a Balinese, pay your respects at the Tirta Empul temple or Holy Springs Temple located in Tampaksiring, where each family in Bali goes for cleansing and gathering the Holy water. If there is a ceremony or dance in our village, you have the choice to visit that instead and meet my extended family.
Why We Do This
I’m very proud of the unique Balinese culture and would like to share it with people from around the world. Everyday life of the Balinese community and spiritual belief is linked with each other in a union we call Hindu Dharma. This union helps to protect the people because we believe in no killing, no cruelty and no jealousy. We call this way of life, Karma.

As part of Indiescapes curation, I went on this trip with Wayan and Putri. Wayan is extremely knowledgeable and answered all the questions I had on Balinese culture and customs. More importantly, his enthusiam about sharing his culture makes the trip very enjoyable!

Putri, his wife, is a fabulous cook and extremely hospitable. We were greeted with chilled drinks when we came back from walking under the hot sun, and delicious food awaited us for lunch.

My favourite part was being dressed in the Balinese costumes and visiting the temples. Besides telling us about the religious practices, Wayan also shared lovely stories of how young people socialize and meet in the temples and his own personal love story. Remember to ask him about it!

Wayan was an incredible host and tour guide. He was so helpful during my stay in Bali, always available and ready for anything that I wanted to see or do. He was very punctual and willing to help at any moment, sometimes with very short notice. His kindness, generosity of spirit made each tour a pleasure, I was very thankful to have him during my stay and look forward to my next visit with him and his lovely wife.

We spent 5 days with Wayan and each day was great. He was always happy and full of stories about Bali. He offered us different options for our daily trips but was always flexible if we wanted to do something else during the day.

Good driver, very patient with the children, my boys loved him.

Thanks to him, we visited the true Bali and met amazing people. We are so pleased to have the chance to meet him and his wife, who is an amazing cook.

True and unforgetable experience

MUST-DO IN UBUD! Wayan is an amazing host!!

This was the best experience we had while in Ubud with my husband and baby boy! And believe it or not, we saw no tourists the whole day. It was a genuine local experience.

It was a rainy day, but Wayan had many umbrellas to keep us dry. We walked through rice fields, where he explained to us how the irrigation system works, and how important these grains are for the population. The trail passed by his own land, and my baby was amazed with his animals. Cow, pigs, chickens, and more chickens. We then arrived at his home, where he lives with his family. Amazing hospitality, we were received with green coconuts, and his daughters played with our baby, while we were served an amazing home-cooked meal.
After listening to great and curious stories about Balinese lifestyle in the dinner table, Wayan and his wife dressed us up to visit the temple. Even our baby had his own little outfit.
I let my camera fall into the rice field earlier the day (lol), and was sad to no be able to take more pictures of the experience, so Wayan took many pictures of us to share.
After we were all looking nice, we headed to the temple, where we could see their religious side, and how much they thank god for the rice they grow. I don't want to spoil the surprise effect of your experience sharing all the details.. but in summary: it is a must do in Ubud.

As a traveler who likes to wander and get lost occasionally, I was initially a little skeptical about being on a guided tour. I now have to say that the tour exceeded my expectations. I don't want to give too many spoilers so I won't describe what we did in detail. A few points that struck me: 1) we did not run into any other tourist along the whole way which is exceptional for Ubud, 2) we actually went into an authentic Balinese home and met the family, 3) Wayan our guide actually grew up in that area and played there since he was a boy, 4) he went out of his way to send us home an hour outside of Ubud late at night.

I highly recommend this experience!
